Sun Life celebrates Canada’s 150th with more music

Sun Life is expanding its popular Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library program with more instruments and more cities –in honour of our nation’s 150th anniversary

More Canadians will be able to explore the joy of making music this year. In honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary, Sun Life Financial is expanding the highly successful Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library program, currently operating in the Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal public libraries. This innovative program will be available in more cities across Canada, putting more musical instruments into the hands of Canadians. Library patrons with a valid library card can borrow a variety of instruments free of charge.

First launched at the Toronto Public Library and later expanded to the Vancouver and Montreal public libraries, the program is an overwhelming success. In each city, all instruments were loaned out within a week of launch, and would-be musicians at all libraries in the program are currently experiencing wait times to borrow instruments.

To help meet the high demand, Sun Life will be donating an additional 50 instruments to the program’s libraries, for a total donation of 150 instruments for each library, to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary. Sun Life will also donate money to participating libraries to fund the program’s operating costs in addition to donating the instruments, which include guitars, ukuleles, violins, drums, xylophones and portable keyboards.

Work is already underway to add new cities to the program, so watch for an announcement about where the program will expand to next.

The musical instrument lending library is part of Sun Life’s award-winning Making the Arts More AccessibleTM program.

"Music is an important part of Canadian culture and heritage, which is why we're thrilled to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday by making music more accessible to individuals and their families," says Sun Life Financial Canada President (and guitarist) Kevin Dougherty. "At Sun Life, we're committed to building sustainable, healthier communities and we know libraries are vibrant community hubs and a rich source of culture. Music and the arts play an important role in our society and I'm proud that we can provide the opportunity for so many Canadians to experience and enjoy the positive power of music"
